Feels like I’ve been writing about sandwiches and burgers the past few days. Let’s switch things up to dessert. I’m thinking cupcakes.
Cupkates is a well-known food truck in San Francisco that serves fancy cupcakes. They recently started stopping by the Berkeley area, so the treats are definitely attainable if you’re in the East Bay.
I don’t get these dessert fads. Froyo, and now this. But when I take a closer look, it all makes perfect sense. Desserts are delicious. People love to eat delicious things, especially sweets after a meal. The food industry can slap on a “gourmet” label and charge extra for something people love to eat. Smart.
How did the cupcake stack up? The flavor I ordered, red velvet cake , was basically a mini-red velvet cake, with a cream cheese frosting. It was amazing, possibly the perfect cupcake. Moist, not mushy, not too sweet, with a good frosting-to-cake ratio. I can see now why people order boxes of these things.
Of course, this will probably be a one time thing for me. I just can’t justify spending $3 on a medium-sized cupcake – it’s not worth it to me. But that limited-time key lime cupcake sure looks good.
