My manager has been talking about The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen since I started work a couple months ago. Yesterday, we finally stopped by the place for lunch. I was curious how grilled cheese could be so fervently recommended, not only by him, but also by hundreds of Yelp reviewers.
The restaurant was located on a busy street corner close to the AT&T Park. I took a look a the menu – and was slightly taken aback by the prices of their “grilled cheese” offerings. Most of the sandwiches were in the $9 range, but sounded delicious with names like Mushroom Gruyere, Jalapeno Popper, and Club Turkey.
I ordered the Club Turkey, and I can tell you this was no ordinary grilled cheese.
Tillamook sharp cheddar, creamy havarti, Willie Bird smoked turkey, applewood-smoked bacon, Sierra Nevada stout mustard, roasted tomatos, arugula – these were the ingredients listed on the menu, and they worked together to make the taste buds tingle.
Wow. This was probably the best grilled cheese I’ve ever had. If you could call it a grilled cheese. It was basically a really tasty gourmet sandwich with melted cheese added in.
