Out of all the types of food at Berkeley, Indian food has definitely had the least exposure in my food explorations. And I’m not exactly sure why. Maybe there’s not that many Indian restaurants? Nah. Maybe I just don’t like Indian food? No way.
I really do like Indian food, and Vic’s Chaat Corner backs up my statement. This place has been in Berkeley for over two decades, is a favorite among the locals, and serves some pretty tasty Indian food.
First, the location. It’s on Fourth Street, the more industrial part of Berkeley, hidden among the small factories and warehouses. Despite looking like another warehouse from the outside, the inside is like a high-end cafeteria.
Since I came with Justin, and he had just spent the summer in India (he also recommended the place), I told him to order the good stuff. He picked out the cholle bhature, lamb biryani, and rose lassi.
The cholle bhature was a giant puffy bread with irresistible lentil dip. The rose lassi reminded me of strawberry-flavored yogurt. My favorite part of the meal was definitely the main part: the lamb biryani. Shredded lamb, cooked with spices over rice. Perfect consistency, just the right amount of spiciness, and a satisfied palate.
It’s not surprising that Vic’s gets lots of love from the locals. It’s got a hole-in-the-wall appeal, a nice indoor environment, and lots of good food.
