For the longest time, I failed to make the connection between “deli” and “delicatessen.” Turns out they have the same meaning. I also thought the word had roots in Italian, but it’s actually German for “delicacies.”
But enough of comprehension failure, you came here for the food!
And I went to Genova Delicatessen precisely because of the rave reviews (and past experience) of the deli meats and sandwiches. The place is authentically Italian – they sell imported pasta, sauces, crackers, etc. in the waiting area, and I’m pretty sure I heard the workers speaking Italian behind the counter.
There’s a huge selection of deli meats and endless customizable sandwiches. What sets this place apart from any other old deli is the quality – I ordered a pastrami sandwich, and the pastrami was fresh and tasted heavenly. I can’t quite put it into words, but I’m certain you won’t be disappointed if you try any of the meats they have to offer.
Genova is a 10-minute bus ride (1 or 1R) down Telegraph, and the food is definitely worth the extra wait.
