Sometimes, disasters lead to rebirth. Chew on that thought for a minute.
In this specific case, I’m referring to two food-related disasters – the burning down of Great China and the closing of Milanese Caffe, two of the better-quality restaurants in the Berkeley area.
Happy Valley is a new Chinese restaurant filling the void left behind by Great China and is located where Milanese used to be. Ah, things are beginning to connect.
There are several Chinese places around campus, varying widely in quality and authenticity, and while Happy Valley isn’t the best, it’s definitely one of the better ones.
I ordered their Mongolian Beef, which came with well-cooked rice and fresh, tender (and flavorful) beef. Not too salty or oily, and the onions were actually cooked right, unlike the ones you get at Sun Hong Kong.
Lunch prices are in the $6-$7 range, portions are plenty, and service is friendly. I’d recommend giving this place a shot. Good quality Chinese food at good prices near campus. A new life indeed.
