Mention Gregoire to most people who know of the place and you’ll hear two words: potato puffs. While it’s true that this take-out gourmet restaurant at Berkeley’s famed Gourmet Ghetto is known for its delicious starchy appetizers, Gregoire is much more than that.
With a healthy variety of amazing sandwiches and salads for lunch and an assortment of French/American-style gourmet dishes for dinner, Gregoire is the perfect place to spend a little more for classy food, without having to put up with the meager portions and dim lighting seen at many classy restaurants.
In fact, the whole setup of this restaurant encourages people to pick the take-out option, from the unique cardboard food boxes to the fact that there are only several picnic tables outside of the small building. But make no mistake, the food is top-notch quality. I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich for lunch, and I’ve had friends who’ve ordered roast duck for dinner. The menu changes every month, so you’re bound to encounter a few standout dishes any time you visit.
And did I mention the potato puffs? Those things are to die for.
