Sushi Asahi

I’ve been to one other non-buffet all-you-can-eat sushi place in my life, so when the opportunity came up to try another one, I couldn’t refuse! Here’s how it works – for a one-time fee, you can order as many sushi rolls, special rolls, and hand rolls as you can eat in three rounds.

Sushi Asahi is a well-known AYCE sushi restaurant in the Riverside area, and they recently opened a new one in Corona, the one I went to. Upon entering we were greeted by a very enthusiastic owner shouting “Happy New Year!” He had an uncanny resemblance to Drift King Keiichi Tsuchiya.

We sat down and started to order. Now here’s the secret to getting your money’s worth at an AYCE sushi place: start with the fish first, ease your way into the special rolls, and finish up with some more fish. And did Sushi Asahi have some really delicious fish. Tuna, salmon, red snapper, and all the usuals were fresh with minimal rice, a bonus in my book.

The special rolls were interesting, too. My favorite was the Popcorn Lobster, a crispy and creamy roll with deep-fried lobster bits over Cali rolls. We ordered a total of three rounds and got a good balance of fresh fish and special rolls (especially the yummy deep-fried stuff). What an awesome lunch, all for $18!
