The Melt

Fun fact of the day: The Melt was started by the founder of the Flip camcorder company. At first glance, tech to grilled cheese seems like a pretty drastic jump, but when you look a little closer, everything starts to make sense.

The Bay Area, especially Silicon Valley and San Francisco, is home to thousands of tech companies and is considered by many to be the tech center of the United States, perhaps the world. The Bay Area, especially San Francisco, is also home to a variety of grilled cheese eateries, from food trucks to restaurants offering gourmet-style sandwiches. You can say that grilled cheese, especially fancy and/or expensive grilled cheese, is quite a hit with young working professionals in the city.

About a semester ago, The Melt came to Berkeley, and I haven’t had the chance to try it out until now. Upon entering the nicely furnished and decorated fast-casual restaurant (industrial and minimalist design, of course), I was greeted by a friendly lady behind the register. I ordered The Parisian Melt – brie cheese with apple honey and bacon on country French bread, along with the Creamy Wild Mushroom Soup.

The grilled cheese was pretty tasty – definitely not your average grilled cheese. I especially liked the hint of apple honey, a very nice (and subtle) part of the overall taste. The soup on the other hand was pretty average. Overall, I enjoyed the meal but the portions seemed too small to justify the ~$10 price for the combo. I was glad to give the place a shot and I definitely want to go back to try their S’more Melt!
