KC’s Bar-B-Que

I’d like to share a hidden gem of a restaurant in Berkeley. It’s located a bit further west, on San Pablo Ave, but it’s definitely bus-able and would be well worth your time to try at least once. Good meat is a special treat, after all – especially when served in heaping portions and slathered in tangy and delicious BBQ sauce.

KC’s Bar-B-Que is the name of the game. This hole-in-the-wall restaurant has one of the most nondescript exteriors that I’ve seen. But once you enter the restaurant, it’s shocking how quickly that image changes. You’ve stepped back in time, surrounded by old-time furniture, various antiques, and even an old piano and parts of a drum set. The tables are set in a family dining style, so it feels like you’ve been transported into an old Southern home.

How about the food? I was extra hungry that day, so I ordered the 3-way combo platter, which included a generous helping of ribs (short-end), hot links, and beef brisket, drowned in one of the most flavorful BBQ sauces I’ve tried in a long time. The potato salad, beans, and toast helped diversify the taste, and overall the meal balanced out nicely – as nicely as a giant serving of meat could be.

There seems to be two types of BBQ places in Berkeley – the hip, modern BBQ joints, and the more traditional, family-style joints. KC’s falls under the latter, and I can definitely appreciate the overall experience they offer!
