Last weekend, a family friend of mine drove up to visit me in the city. I’d barely moved in but was put in charge of finding a good place to enjoy a Sunday morning brunch. After some quick researching online, the results kept pointing to a particular eatery in the Mission.
Called Universal Cafe, this place was located among some warehouses but had a nice and inviting exterior, reminding me of a bigger Gregoire. The place was pretty packed, so we signed in, waited for a little bit, and was soon seated on bar stools, watching chefs frantically making delicious-looking meals in front of us.
I had to order the French toast, which came with kashiwase farm nectarines, blueberry-strawberry sauce, and chantilly cream. When the plate came, I was surprised at how huge the portion was – easily double what many other French toast plates offer. The toast itself didn’t disappoint. Amazingly fluffy and full-of-flavor, the savory toast worked really well with the sweet nectarines and cream.
I had trouble finishing, not because it wasn’t delicious (it most definitely was), but because there was just so much food! Well worth the wait and a lovely place to grab a weekend brunch.
